Bone grafting is a beneficial treatment which successfully restores jaw bone that has been lost due to gum disease and tooth loss. Grafting can also be used to build up bone in a particular area to allow the placement of dental implants. Your talented dentist, Dr. Anne Nicholas, and her team of specialists, proudly offer this treatment to finally give you the oral health and well-being you deserve.

The grafting procedure will involve Dr. Nicholas taking bone from another area of your body, or from another donor, and applying that bone onto the required area of your mouth. This is a beneficial and effective treatment that will give you the results you’re looking for. However, the recovery process is extremely important and necessary if you want a successful outcome. To help you heal properly, our team of specialists recommend that you do the following things:

Stop the bleeding – You can expect some bleeding after your bone graft surgery. It’s not uncommon to bleed somewhat for the first 12 to 24 hours. To help the situation, keep a gauze pad over the surgical site and bite firmly for about one hour. After the time has passed, remove and discard the pad. If the bleeding begins again, repeat this process.

Reduce swelling – You can reduce swelling with the immediate use of ice packs. Place the pack outside the area for 30-minute intervals for the first 24 to 48 hours. This will help reduce the swelling in the mouth, cheeks, eyes and side of the face.

Take medications – Generally, Dr. Nicholas will prescribe pain medication to you to relieve any discomfort. Be sure to take the medication on a full stomach. Also, your caring dentist might prescribe antibiotics to you to help prevent infection. Make sure you follow the instructions and take the tablets or liquid until it’s gone.

Watch your diet – During the first 24 hours, drink plenty of liquids, like water, juice and milk. You may also eat cool and soft foods — just make sure you chew away from the graft site. Do not eat or drink hot products on the first day, and please do not use straws. Drinking from straws can dislodge the clot and promote more bleeding.

Get plenty of rest – It’s best to avoid strenuous activity for the first two or three days following your treatment because your normal caloric intake may be reduced, and you may be dehydrated after the surgery. It’s also best to rest as much as possible so your recovery will be quick and successful.
